WainFest - Donegal Children’s Arts and Book Festival

October is the time of year when Donegal County Council Library Service focus on our young readers through our Wainfest Children’s Arts and Book Festival.  The programme for this year’s festival was announced on the 1st October in a series of simultaneous launches across the County. Children from Ballybofey, Buncrana, Bundoran, Gweedore and Letterkenny were joined by their elected representative at their local library for the unveiling of this year’s programme.

This year the festival is celebrating a big milestone by turning eighteen.  To celebrate we are holding story parties for all the family on Saturday the 11th of October at 11am in our Buncrana, Bundoran, Carndonagh, Letterkenny and Milford libraries.  The party will consist of a storytelling session, games and craft activities based on the European Folktale of Hansel & Gretel.  And it wouldn’t be a party without a few treats in a bag!

For the schools, this year’s programme has an emphasis on borrowing books with book borrowing sessions being held throughout the festival. The promotion of reading and reading development plays an important role in our service.  Therefore we encourage all the teachers and parents, as well as all children, not only to avail of the wonderful events during Wainfest but to avail of the array of books available to borrow for free.

Also there is the opportunity to win a €50 book voucher by entering our photo competition on the theme ‘Get caught reading’.  All you have to do is e-mail your entry to [email protected] and the finalists will be posted on the library facebook page. For more information visit www.donegallibrary.ie.

Wainfest will run for eight days from Sat. 11th Oct to Sat. 18th of October in libraries, Taobh Tíre centres, the Regional Cultural Centre and the County Museum. Events promise to provide an abundance of fun and creativity with authors, artists, scientists and illustrators who promise to spark the imagination of children across the County.   Europe Direct events throughout the programme aim to highlight European issues by providing fun interactive performances of some of the Ireland’s leading performers in history, storytelling and music. The programme of events can be viewed on www.donegallibrary.ie or pick up a brochure at your local library.  All events are free of charge, so why not celebrate with us and join the party!

The Donegal & Gaeltacht Europe Direct Information Centre is co-funded by Donegal County Council and the European Union.
